Thirteen Black Roses

by Jennifer Pitcock

The day was dark in Caledon
When the young man said goodbye.
He told his wife he'd see her soon,
But they both saw through the lie.
So away he went with sword in hand,
His wife began to cry.
Silently, she made a vow--
She'd never let him die.

The battlefield was bitter cold
As the soldiers stood their ground.
The young man's wife had followed close
And watched without a sound.
She saw her husband stumble back
As the demon struck him down.
Hatred flooded all her soul--
She thought she'd surely drown.

I'll send thirteen black roses--
A dozen for the young man and one for his bride.
I'll send thirteen black roses
For the soldier and the lady who stayed by his side.

The laughing demon caught her eye,
Which made him laugh the more.
She took her husband's silver blade
She knew he'd need no more.
She sprang up like a banshee-maid
And slew him with a roar.
Alone she stood, alone she cried,
And fell upon the sword.

I'll send thirteen black roses--
A dozen for the young man and one for his bride.
I'll send thirteen black roses
For the soldier and the lady who stayed by his side.
